How to Get Rid of Bats

The first and most essential step in managing a bat problem is a detailed inspection of your property. Understanding how bats are entering your home or building allows for safe and permanent removal.

Bats are frequently found in attics, barns, roofs, and wall voids, where they seek warmth and shelter. Although bats play an important role in controlling insects, their presence indoors can pose serious health risks, including exposure to rabies, histoplasmosis, and parasitic pests like bat mites.

Removing bats requires professional care; these are protected wildlife species in Canada, meaning humane and regulated exclusion methods must be used. Traps, poisons, or harm of any kind are illegal and unsafe. Instead, our certified experts use one-way exclusion devices, sealing all entry points once the bats have safely exited.

If you suspect bat activity or notice signs of droppings, odour, or scratching noises in your attic or walls, contact our licensed Canadian pest control professionals for immediate help. We offer responsive call-out services to assess and safely resolve bat infestations.

How do I know if bats are living in my attic?

Scratching or fluttering sounds at dusk and dawn, dark oily rub marks around attic vents or gaps under eaves, and small pellet-like droppings (guano) accumulating below entry points. In summer you may see bats exiting at dusk — watch your roofline for 20 minutes after sunset and count.

Are bats in my attic dangerous?

They carry real risks: guano buildup can harbour histoplasmosis-causing fungus, and any direct contact with a bat carries a rabies concern. That said, bats are protected and ecologically valuable — the right approach is humane exclusion, not extermination. Never handle a bat yourself; call us at (306) 716-6900.

How does humane bat exclusion work?

We install one-way exclusion devices over the entry points: bats can leave at night to feed but cannot get back in. Once we confirm the colony has exited (usually a few nights), we permanently seal every entry gap. No bats are harmed, and the colony simply relocates.

When can bat exclusion be done? Is there a season to avoid?

Exclusion must never be done during maternity season (roughly June through August in Saskatchewan), when flightless pups are in the roost — sealing entries then would trap and kill them, which is both inhumane and illegal. The ideal windows are spring before pups arrive and fall after they can fly. Book an inspection and we will time it correctly.

Do you clean up bat guano?

Yes. Guano accumulation is a health hazard, so after exclusion we remove droppings and disinfect the affected attic areas. Heavy accumulations may need insulation replacement, which we will assess honestly during the inspection.

How do I keep bats from coming back?

A thorough exclusion seal is the answer — bats return to roosts year after year, so every gap larger than a centimetre must be sealed: ridge vents, soffits, fascia gaps, chimneys, and where siding meets the roof. Our exclusion work includes a full entry-point inspection of the whole structure.
